Familiar… but very different
A view of Japan

Tokyo hotel view

Last week our director Nick spent a few days in Japan, and while he was there he took some photographs. As these pictures reveal, it’s a culture with many similarities to ours but some strange differences too.

The picture at the top shows the view from a hotel in Tokyo. Note how you can see the sea (Tokyo is a port).

Below is someone’s unpretentious home, but look how modern it is. Notice the two little rectangular patches of bright red flowers near the front door.

Nick visited a shop curated by the Korean stylist Sonia Park called Arts & Science II. Here’s a view of its rather magical exterior.

Here’s a small section of the map in the Tokyo underground. Nick says he found it a trifle confusing. (We’re sometimes surprised he can navigate through Tokyo on his own at all.)

And here we have Sunspel tees on display in the new Boys Company shop – our wonderful Japanese distributors. They store an eclectic and rather fascinating array of items, including much from the UK and Europe.

These are made by Orcival and are original Breton tops.

Here’s an assortment of objects, mainly from Europe.

Later on two of the Boys Co team, Mr Morita and Mr Masuda, took Nick for dinner in this Tokyo restaurant, Aritzuki.

He ate Motsu-nabe, which is a bowl of fresh pluck. Not sure what fresh pluck is? Apparently it’s bits of cow’s stomach. Nick says it was very tasty.

menu item

We don’t know what the dish above is, but it’s served at the same restaurant.

Nick also ate Basashi, which is raw horse meat. He says it tasted rather like carpaccio, and was equally delicious. Why don’t we eat such things in this country?
