Just opened: Sunspel
If we told you that east London’s latest boutique sells old pants, would you be surprised? The area is home to the city’s most avant-garde shops and galleries, so a new store selling antique undies might fail to raise an eyebrow – but all that suits heritage brand Sunspel. Maker of men’s underwear since 1860, Sunspel is a master of the understated, concentrating on fit rather than brash branded goods, and its new shop on Redchurch Street already looks as though it’s been there for 150 years. Two floors of underwear, T-shirts and polo shirts are artfully laid out with creaky additions – an old desk, a posting tray – from the Sunspel factory in Derbyshire. A refreshing simple store on the most hyped street in town. Dan Jones
