  • SUNSPEL X MONOCLE

Posted on May 14, 2012 by Matthew

A few weeks ago we announced our collaboration with Global affairs magazine Monocle. It all started back in January, when the Financial Times interviewed Monocle editor, Tyler Brûlé, in it he cited Sunspel as the ultimate underwear essential. After just a few months and a lot of development, during which we created these unique underwear styles, we launched this collaboration which is close to our heart. The designs were based on iconic British style in the 1960s as photographed by David Bailey. To learn more about the collaboration, click here

To celebrate the collaboration we held an event in our Soho store, with a selection of Sunspel and Monocle guests attending. Below are some photo highlights from the evening, to see all the photographs visit our facebook photo album

  • SUNSPEL IN-STORE SPECIAL
    PATCHWORK T-SHIRTS

Posted on April 26, 2012 by Matthew

Sunspel has been making simple clothing special since 1860. Our design ethos of 'review and refine' has led us to develop fabrics and make luxury clothes that are worn and loved all over the world. Our inventory of designs, papers, letters and records are constantly being reconsidered in great detail, and new styles and collections are being born in the true ‘review and refine’ way that defines the essence of Sunspel.

These patchwork t-shirts were conceived in the design room at our Long Eaton factory, on the cutting table, we began collaging a carefully selected array of archived fabrics from the very recent to the distant past; a French stripe for the pocket, a finer stripe for the arm and so on. Each stripe has its own story, some inspired by iconic looks of London fashion in the 1960s, others informed by everyday staples like classic tea towels and kitchenware to refined patterns found on traditional schoolwear and gentlemen's ties. All our stripe reports have been scrutinised and perfected to have the best proportion, size and colour – and all using our luxury Q82 superfine cotton fabric.

These t-shirts are a playful re-appropriation of a classic t-shirt into something totally unique. The designs have then been expertly crafted by our machinists and the result is an exclusive collection of 10 t-shirts that represent a literal patchwork of Sunspel’s history in a thoroughly contemporary design.

These 10 collectable t-shirts are the most recent additions to the Sunspel product range. Only available in limited numbers, they’re certain to be future classics. Right now, though, they’re an opportunity to own part of Sunspel’s unique heritage.

Exclusively available in Sunspel stores now.

Vanguard photographer and director Sharif Hamza melds Ivy League style with Olympic intensity in his new film, enlisting professional athletes and models for a sleek training session. The filmmaker drew inspiration from the air of exclusivity surrounding the sport. “Rowing has always seemed to be somewhat elitist to me; something that everybody recognizes, but a privileged few actually get to experience," Hamza says. "I also associate that with the world of fashion. So the context was ideal."

Visit NOWNESS to read more about the film.

  • A century of sunglasses
    Moscot Eyewear

Posted on March 29, 2011 by Matthew

It's spring, and the sun is out, and where there is sunshine you need sunglasses. So during a recent visit to New York we visited Sol Moscot Opticians. Almost 100 years old, with years of expertise and a strong heritage sensibility, Moscot's eyewear is renowned worldwide for its retro NY downtown frames.

The store first opened its doors in 1915 at 94 Rivington Street, but moved to its permanent home at 118 Orchard Street in 1950. Worn by stars such as Helena Bonham Carter, Justin Timberlake and Josh Hartnet, the iconic black plastic frames are a perfect accessory for any spring/summer look – a good compliment for a new Sunspel salvage stripe t-shirt or Riviera polo.

But if an American frame isn't what you're after, there are always the London-based specialists Cutler and Gross or Oliver Goldsmith to try.

  • Crafting space
    Rachel Whiteread and Ai Weiwei

Posted on March 22, 2011 by Matthew

A while ago Turner Prize winner Rachel Whiteread created an installation for the Tate Modern. She made casts of the inside of 14,000 cardboard boxes and stacked them in the enormous Turbine Hall to form a labyrinth-like structure that climbed the walls and seemed to expand into space. The experience was intriguing, disorientating and surprising.

The current exhibition at the Tate is entitled Sunflower Seeds and takes a very different approach.

The work by Ai Weiwei initially appears to be a room full of identical sunflower seeds, but each seed is in fact uniquely hand crafted out of porcelain. Not one is identical. The 100 million seeds were produced by hundreds of specialists working out of the Chinese city of Jingdezhen.

The end result is utterly unlike Whiteread's chaotic landscape of white cubes. Instead there's a sense of serenity and great openness. The space feels calm and reflective, even melancholy.

Both exhibitions were part of the Unilever Series, and both demonstrate extraordinary amounts of skill and craftsmanship – yet create utterly different effects.

The Sunflower Seeds exhibition runs until 2 May and is free. Visit the Tate Modern website for more information.
