The preparations are complete. London is all set for the eyes of the world to watch Prince William and Catherine Middleton tie the knot, the expected 2 billion pairs of them. For the hundreds of thousands lining the streets of the Mall and the millions watching television, it will be an iconic event in history.

There’s been talk of cakes, dresses, rings, guests, crowds and flowers. The world is at fever pitch in anticipation. But Sunspel remembers the older weddings, the royal weddings of the past. Our 150 year history has seen many such iconic occasions. The Queen Mother's, Her Majesty the Queen’s, Lady Diana and Prince Charles, and more, reaching back into the century before last.

And through all the silver, gold, diamonds, silk, satin, velvet and all the opulence, the Sunspel plain white t-shirt has lived on, humble in comparison.

A royal wedding is not a new phenomenon, but the live coverage to a worldwide audience is. It is a far cry from the time when fears that men in pubs would watch the ceremony with their hats on prevented proceedings from being broadcast. We have also changed with the times. Our own archive is full of idiosyncrasies from times gone by. And although our story is not of such epic proportions as the monarchy’s, we at least like to think our cotton is fit for a King, and indeed a Queen.

This week saw the launch of the Sunspel film 'Repton Boxing Club', by Alasdair McLellan, a fascinating look into Britain's most famous amateur boxing club in the East End of London. The film features Ryan Pickard, Ellis Pickard, Louis Cadman and Sam Lawson, wearing Sunspel classics, boxing, training and discussing everything from tattoos to who was the world's greatest boxer.
The launch was held in conjunction with Fantastic Man magazine, around the corner from the Sunspel shop, at the Rochelle School in Club Row. With quintessentially British food and drink, the guests were able to see the film projected the entire height of a wall, with prints that went along with the film also being displayed.
Above, the film is being set up for the preview. Below, the prints are displayed on the wall.

Hundreds of people turned up for the event, from the boxers themselves to magazine editors such as Katie Grand (Love Magazine), writers such as Tim Blanks, Susie Lau of Style Bubble, chef Margot Henderson, our creative director J.W.Anderson, designer Richard Nicoll and the director of the Tate Modern Chris Dercon.
