Sunspel Wins the Walpole Luxury British Award for Made in the UK
We’re excited to announce that Sunspel has won the Made in the UK award at the Walpole British Luxury Awards.
Last week, London’s infamous Dorchester Hotel played host to the annual Walpole British Luxury Awards. Some 400 brands gathered for the event that celebrates and recognises the best of British luxury across a wide range of industries and sectors – from cars to watches, hotels and fashion. The awards are some of the most revered in the country so we were exceptionally proud when Sunspel’s name was announced as the winner for the Made in the UK award.
British designer Charlie Casely-Hayford presented us with the prize in recognition of our“excellence in and commitment to, the making and development of British luxury goods,” and for our “exceptional export business selling the best of UK luxury to the rest of the world.”
At Sunspel we’ve been crafting garments in Britain for over 160 years. The business was founded to make luxury clothing for export to every corner of the globe and today we still do exactly that. Every one of our Classic T-shirts is handmade in our factory in Long Eaton, Derbyshire, using decades of knowledge and expertise that have been passed down through the generations. Executive Chairman Nick Brooke acknowledged this in his acceptance speech, saying, “The real thanks goes to the people that work at the Long Eaton factory creating these special products.”
Our Classic T-shirts are not our only British-made products however. We also draw on centuries of British knitwear manufacturing expertise, working closely with the country’sbest craftspeople. Much of our knitwear range is made in Scotland. Key to the unique luxuriousness of these pieces is the Scottish spring water in which we wash the wool yarns. It’s remarkably ‘soft’ and opens the yarn’s fibres leaving it with a beautifully soft finish. The finest of all our Scottish pieces is the Roxburgh Cashmere Jumper. Crafted in Hawick, Roxburghshire, it is thick, warm and sumptuous – a true celebration of Scotland’s world-renowned cashmere industry.
We also have many English knitwear pieces. England’s wool industry dates back to medieval times so there is a huge amount of knowledge to be tapped into. The pinnacle of this collection is our Luxury British Jumper. It’s crafted from the exceptionally soft wool of the Bluefaced Leicester sheep which are reared in the hills of north-west England and it’s spun, carded, combed, scoured and knitted in Bradford and Leicester – all within 150 miles of our factory in Long Eaton.
We have a great range of other British-made goods, from Harris Tweed coats to luxury socks and leather shoes. We’re honoured to have been awarded the Made in the UK Walpole Awardand we will continue to proudly showcase the best of British luxury manufacturing, as we have for the last 160 years.
