Why 15.5 Microns Matters

Sunspel cashmere measures 15.5 microns. That is Grade A, and about a fifth of the width of a human hair.

Fibres this fine bend rather than prick the skin. That is why good cashmere feels soft against the neck and wrists, not scratchy. Fine fibres also hold more still air for their weight. A light jumper keeps you as warm as a heavier one.

Two jumpers can both say "100% cashmere" on the label and be made from very different fibre. The label does not tell you the micron count. Sunspel does.

Where Sunspel Cashmere Comes From

GRADE A CASHMERE

Sunspel cashmere comes from goats farmed in Inner Mongolia [TO CONFIRM: herders or cooperatives, Chloe checking]. The fibre is spun into yarn in Hebei Province, China, then knitted in Portugal by a partner Sunspel has worked with for over 15 years.

Sunspel works this way for a simple reason. Long relationships with the people who make its clothes keep the quality the same from one season to the next.

How to care for cashmere

Looked after properly, cashmere lasts for years and grows softer with wear.

- Wash only when you need to. Cashmere resists odour, and a night airing is often enough.
- Hand wash in cool water with a little wool detergent. Do not rub or wring.
- Lay it flat to dry, away from direct heat and sunlight. Never tumble dry.
- Fold your knitwear; hanging stretches it. Store it in a breathable cotton bag.
