Introducing Sunspel X Shoes Like Pottery

When it comes to getting dressed, nothing marks the arrival of spring quite like a fresh pair of sneakers. As the days become longer, warmer and imbued with the promise of summer, the chance to swap sensible leather shoes and heavy boots for something lighter is nothing short of joyful.

To celebrate this moment in the season, we’ve teamed up with our friends at Shoes Like Pottery to create a special version of their signature high-top and low-top sneaker in an exclusive Sunspel colour.

In recent years, canvas sneakers seem to have transcended all age, gender and occasion boundaries to become a wardrobe staple, and so it makes perfect sense that there is no shortage of choice when it comes to investing in a new pair. But if like us you have fallen foul to the appearance of mysterious holes, or quickly worn down soles, you will know that not all sneakers are made alike.

We think of Shoes Like Pottery as the holy grail of the canvas sneaker. The secret is in the way that they are manufactured which – as you might have guessed from the name – draws close comparisons to the way in which Japanese pottery is made. After the shoes have been assembled by hand, they are fired in a kiln at a temperature of 120 degrees, for 70 minutes. This is the vulcanising process, known as ka-ryu in Japanese. The combination of the extreme heat and pressure in the kiln causes the rubber and the sulphur that the soles of the shoes are made from, to chemically react, returning the rubber to its natural elasticity to create a uniquely soft, flexible and importantly durable sole.

For a pair of canvas sneakers that will last long enough to become faithful favourites, find our special edition Shoes Like Pottery styles exclusively in Sunspel Stores and Online.
