“I like to wear comfortable essentials – timeless, minimal pieces and materials that feel good on my skin.”
Sunspel invited photographer Iris Humm to capture her life at home during the 2020 lockdown. We supplied her with a selection of Sunspel's most comfortable loungewear to share with her family and asked her about her life, work and her idea of everyday luxury.
Tell us about your work.
I shoot a mix of genres including documentary, portraits, travel, interiors and fashion, and I always try to convey a sense of warmth and intimacy in all of my work. I try to communicate the emotional quality of a moment, inviting the viewer into my captured environment.
Where is home for you?
My father is Swiss and my mother is French-Chinese. My sister and I were both born and grew up in Milan. She then moved to Portugal, I moved to Spain –– and my mother now lives in France, so we are all spread around the world and try to see each other whenever we can!
What does home mean to you?
I’ve always felt very attached to my family home in Milan, where I was born and lived for most of my life, and our holiday home in Switzerland, where we spent most summers. I feel very connected to both places, what they represent, their light, a view from a window, a particular object and all the memories that come with it.
Living in the orbit of all those things is what gives me a feeling of home: in my Barcelona apartment I have also surrounded myself with objects that represent something important to me, or a time in my life, someone that means a lot to me.
How has 2020 changed your work-life balance?
Being used to traveling very often for work, it has definitely been a challenge having to slow down this year. 2020 has all been about adapting to and embracing change, and focusing more on myself and my personal work.
What luxuries do you value in life?
The luxuries I value are spending time with and sharing a meal with loved ones, swimming in a lake, a beautiful view from a window, a nice piece of furniture, a favourite object or a particular item of clothing.
I like to wear comfortable essentials –– timeless, minimal pieces and materials that feel good on my skin.
