The Lemaire Collection

We’ve joined forces with Paris designer Christophe Lemaire to create a small, exclusive collection of clothes that combine our heritage designs with his contemporary sensibility.

When the team from Lemaire explored our archive of jersey underwear, boxer shorts and pyjamas, they identified two articles that would form the basis for the collection – an archive mesh fabric from the 1950s and a vintage pyjama set.

Manufactured on warp knitting machines from the mid 20th century, our archive mesh fabrics are a direct link to Sunspel’s manufacturing heritage in Nottingham, the home of England’s lace-making industry. For this collection, a newly recreated mesh fabric, inspired by the archive, is used on an oversized tank top and t-shirt, with the iconic Lemaire low pocket adding the final collaborative detail.

The classic pyjama set, meanwhile, has been reimagined using a refined, smooth Italian cotton poplin. The pyjama top gets a modern, Lemaire design makeover and becomes a shirt jacket, while retaining heritage detailing in the revere collar and double pocket. The original pyjama bottoms are given a contemporary feel as wide-fit elasticated trousers with button fly and welt pockets.

The resulting collection takes heritage pieces and gives them a thoroughly contemporary feel, with meticulous attention to detail and cut. It’s a celebration of the two brands’ shared belief in stylish everyday clothing made to the highest standards.

“When we do a collaboration we like to work with brands that have a similar attitude. Lemaire is one such brand, and after visiting our archive brought their discerning design handwriting and attention to detail to the development of some really interesting pieces.” Nicholas Brooke
