Sunspel was approached to help recreate Princess Diana's iconic wardrobe for the new film Spencer. The film, starring Kristen Stewart in the title role, directed by Chilean Pablo Larrain, centres on a pivotal weekend in Diana's life.
“The production team were attracted to the fact we are a long-established British brand, classic and understated, of the kind Lady Diana might have worn as part of her more casual wardrobe,” says David Telfer, Sunspel Creative Director.
Rather than just set-dressing, the clothes and accessories in Spencer carry symbolic weight, helping chart the journey of Diana to a new found confidence and independence. The comfortable, casual merino rollneck that Diana is seen wearing is in marked contrast to a gift that Charles, Prince of Wales, makes of a staid dress and pearl choker.
“The brief for the film was to create pieces that captured Diana’s more casual style and represented comfort and freedom,” says Telfer.
