Developed in the 1950s for warm days on the French Riviera, the Riviera Polo is one of Sunspel’s most recognisable styles.
Made from a lightweight mesh cotton developed in-house, it is breathable, comfortable and cut with a slim, modern silhouette. The style was later adapted for Daniel Craig’s first appearance as James Bond in Casino Royale, and it remains a key piece in the collection today.

Why the Sunspel Riviera Polo Shirt is different
The Riviera Polo Shirt was created by Peter Hill in 1953 after finding that traditional piqué polo shirts were too heavy and uncomfortable for the heat of the South of France. Drawing on Sunspel's experience in developing innovative fabrics, he created a new, lightweight cotton mesh that allowed air to circulate, making it exceptionally cool and comfortable to wear.
Fifty years later, costume designer Lindy Hemming chose the Riviera for Daniel Craig's first appearance as James Bond in Casino Royale. Sunspel tailored the original design to his measurements, slimming the chest and shortening the sleeves to create a cleaner, more contemporary fit. These proportions remain the basis of the Riviera Polo Shirt today.
The original Riviera has a slim fit, short sleeves and a distinctive chest pocket. For a more relaxed fit, the Regular Fit Riviera Polo Shirt offers additional room through the body and comes without a chest pocket.
